following is a short dictionary of body parts and ailments which I
treat in my Clinic, together with some treatments I use.
I have included some professional terms which you might want to ask
about. When
exploring the dictionary, think of simple words.
Abdomen
pain may come from the spine and, if so, responds to physio'
Acupuncture one of the treatments I use for pain-relief primarily
Arthritis responds to physiotherapy
Backs commonest condition seen in my Clinic
Balance often impaired after a leg injury, or as you grow older,
but improved by exercises
Biofeedback a machine which tells us how well you are exercising
Blood circulation helped by heat, exercise and massage

Chest pain may come from the spine and, if so, responds to
therapy
Children have fun in physiotherapy – usually growth problems
or sports injuries
Chronic pain longstanding pain. Acute (recent) pain is easier
to treat, so come quickly!
Continuous professional development I undertake CPD to offer
best quality treatment
Dizziness (vertigo) Often a symptom of neck problems
Ear problems Sometimes pain or tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
comes from neck problems
Elbow Tennis and golfer's elbow respond well to physiotherapy
Electrotherapy Ultrasound and/or interferential therapy help
many conditions
Evidence-based practice CSP sends me guidelines based on latest
research
Exercise(s) tailor-made programmes are given to most patients,
and advice re fitness, if applicable
Foot and ankle Sprains, aches and pains, and biomechanical
problems – all seen!
Fractures Rehabilitation following bone-healing is essential
Groin Strains need physiotherapy
Hand and wrist Lose the use, and you need treatment!
Hip Problems make walking difficult. Physiotherapy helps
Home visits Available by arrangement if Clinic treatment is
considered unsuitable
Hydrotherapy Treatment (exercises) in a local pool
Injury Any bone, joint, muscle or ligament injury needs physiotherapy
Insurance I have full professional and public liability insurance
Jaw Joint problems make eating difficult – come for physiotherapy
Joint You name it, I treat it
Knee Sports injuries, arthritis, walking problems – need physiotherapy
Lifestyle advice Fitness, relaxation, stress reduction – all
part of treatment
Ligaments Hold joints together, and need help when sprained
Manipulation Effective in skilful hands, but potentially damaging
– not my first choice of treatment
Massage May be part of a treatment programme
Mobilisations Rhythmic movements of your joints performed by
therapist
Muscles Contract to move your limbs, and need help when strained
Necks Second commonest condition seen in my Clinic
Nerves Painful when damaged, but amenable to treatment
Pain First goal is to relieve your pain
Posture Incorrect posture will, in time, cause pain. Physiotherapy
helps you to find best posture
Private medical insurance If you have it, check that your insurer
will cover you
Referred pain Pain referred from the spine to a limb – needs
physiotherapy
RSI Work-related disorder – responds to treatment
Respiratory problems Bronchitis, asthma and emphysema benefit
from massage and breathing exercises
Rheumatism Pain and stiffness in muscles and joints – physio'
helps
Rules of Professional Conduct CSP regulates all its members
– this protects you as the patient
Sacro-iliac Joint in the pelvis which may need treatment if
torsioned
Sciatica Pain in the leg referred from the spine
Shoulder Third commonest condition treated in this Clinic
Soft tissues Everything other than bones, cartilages in a joint
– usually injured or over-used
Spine Your back and neck
Sports injuries Need urgent treatment
Strains & sprains Affect soft tissues and need early physiotherapy
Stress Too much can give you pain – learning how to manage
it helps
Surgery Your surgeon may refer you here after an operation
Tendinitis An inflamed tendon (pulley of a muscle) – needs
physio'
TENS Battery operated machine which relieves chronic pain
Weakness Benefits from a graduated programme of strengthening
exercises, tailor-made to your needs
